Jack and Sabina
Jack and Sabina were referred to Siphila Sonke in January 2009 by the Themba Care Hospice. They were both very ill with TB and had no income. Siphila Sonke provided them with an emergency food parcel and then assisted them in obtaining the necessary disability grants.
Jack and Sabina expressed their wish to get married so the Siphila Sonke volunteers who were looking after them gave them a Bible and set up an appointment for them with Reverend Neil Meyer from the Elgin United Church. On 29 November 2009, they were married by Rev Meyer at the Imizamo Church, followed by a wonderful lunch reception held in Bev Morgan’s (Chairlady of Siphila Sonke) garden.
When his health permitted it, Jack ran the gardening project at Siphila Sonke. Sabina attended a course in home-based care through St John’s Ambulance (with Siphila Sonke’s facilitation and encouragement) and was employed by Themba Care Hospice. She now lives near family in Cape Town, where she relocated to after the death of Jack during 2013.
